2023 CMLA The Successful Middle School Book Study

AMLE student members and their faculty are invited to join us for a revised edition of our annual book study of AMLE’s foundational text, The Successful Middle School: This We Believe. Explore the unique developmental nature of middle school students and the implications for teaching, classroom management, and school structures and practices through an engaging, interactive virtual format in a series of four sessions. In addition to exploring what research says, we'll analyze the practices of real schools to explore how these characteristics impact real students and staff. Participants will earn the Successful Middle School Ready digital badge at the conclusion of the study. Registration is free for students who already have a copy of The Successful Middle School: This We Believe. Students who do not already have a copy of the book will receive a copy with a $12.99 registration fee. Sessions will be conducted via Zoom and recorded for those unable to participate live.

Katie Powell, Session Facilitator
Katie Powell is the Director for Middle Level Programs for AMLE and a former middle school special education, Title 1, and ELA teacher. Passionate about reclaiming the wonder and curiosity of learning, Katie is author of the book Boredom Busters: Transform Worksheets, Lectures, and Grading into Engaging, Meaningful Learning Experiences. As part of her role with AMLE, Katie works closely with schools, districts, and affiliate organizations through the Successful Middle School book study, assessment, and Schools of Distinction programs as well as providing professional development and coaching on a variety of middle grades topics.
