Highlights of Exemplary Practices Aligned with the 18 Characteristics of Successful Middle Schools
1) Essential Attribute: Responsive
AIS demonstrates this attribute by focusing on the individual needs of young adolescents through a robust support system. This is realized through the strategic use of Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), dedicated Advisory periods for social-emotional learning, and "Flex" periods that allow teachers to provide targeted interventions for students.
2) Essential Attribute: Challenging
Our school cultivates high expectations by implementing Project Based Learning (PBL), which is scaffolded to support different learner levels. The school also utilizes "data teaming," where departments analyze common formative assessment data to identify student strengths and growth areas, ensuring that instruction remains appropriately rigorous for every student.
3) Characteristic: Educators respect and value young adolescents (Culture & Community)
AIS fosters a culture of mutual respect through the AIS PRIDE core values (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence). These values are not only taught during Advisory but are modeled by faculty and staff in daily interactions. Furthermore, the emphasis on ensuring every student has a "trusted adult" on campus helps build the meaningful relationships necessary to make students feel truly valued.
