Highlights of Exemplary Practices Aligned with the 18 Characteristics of Successful Middle Schools
Essential Attribute: An education for young adolescents should be Responsive
At Phoenix, our entire school culture is built upon the philosophy of "student voice, student choice." This student-centered approach directly addresses the unique developmental needs of our students, shaping a learning environment that reflects their physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs.
In addition to State and District curriculum requirements, core elements of our school include courses like Connections, Global Cultures, and Wellness, as well as Advisory groups, Discovery Days, and student Forum. These are not only parts of our curriculum, but essential aspects that define how we educate students. Together, these experiences foster a learning environment that is both meaningful and empowering for middle school students:
- In Connections and Global Cultures, students engage in broad philosophical topics like "Connect" and "Interact" in 7th grade, and "Identity" and "Impact" in 8th grade, fostering a deep understanding of the interplay between self and society.
- Our Wellness program prioritizes our students' physical and emotional well-being, ensuring a foundation for lifelong appreciation and commitment to personal health and emotional balance.
- The Advisory groups provide a nurturing and supportive space, encouraging strong, trusting relationships between students and teachers.
- Lastly, through the weekly student-run Forum, we actively encourage civil discourse and participation by giving students a genuine voice in shaping their school community.
Together, these fundamental aspects of Phoenix Middle School not only educate but also shape the characters of our students, making our school a vibrant, inclusive community where every voice is heard and valued.
Essential Attribute: An education for young adolescents should be Challenging
Challenging academic experiences are promoted through our unique blend of mastery assessment, novel curriculum, project-based learning, and flexible interdisciplinary block scheduling. Our mastery assessment model is central to this, encouraging intellectual risk-taking and reframing mistakes as learning opportunities. This challenging, yet nurturing environment encourages students to tackle complex tasks fearlessly, cultivating a growth mindset vital for intellectual development.
Our learner-centered curriculum is designed to stimulate students intellectually. Courses like Connections and Global Cultures are pivotal, focusing on developing critical thinking and perspective-taking skills. These courses challenge students to analyze intricate concepts, evaluate diverse viewpoints, and construct well-reasoned arguments, thereby enhancing their intellectual growth.
We also incorporate project-based learning where students have opportunities, inside and outside of school (called “Discovery Days”), to thoroughly investigate ideas that spark their interest. This opportunity not only engages them deeply but also hones their problem-solving skills as they navigate real-world challenges. Furthermore, our interdisciplinary approach combines various subjects in a 90-minute time block, revealing the interconnectedness of knowledge. This teaching method encourages students to apply insights from one area to another, fostering a deeper, more integrated understanding and promoting a holistic learning experience.
Together, these elements at Phoenix Middle School ensure that students are not just academically challenged but are also equipped to explore and develop their passions, laying a strong foundation for lifelong intellectual growth and curiosity.
Essential Attribute: An education for young adolescents should be Empowering
Phoenix's approach to student empowerment centers on fostering autonomy and self-efficacy, vital for personal and academic development. We operate under a guiding principle: "You can do anything you want, as long as it does not disrupt learning." This rule, emphasizing respect and responsibility, encourages students to be conscientious about their educational impact.
Another key to empowering students at Phoenix is Discovery Days. These are two days at the end of each quarter that students participate in self-directed exploratory activities. Whether it's service-learning projects, shadowing professionals, working on self-designed projects, or attending curriculum-related field trips, these experiences offer students the freedom to pursue their interests creatively.
The weekly student Forum offers a platform for students to contribute ideas for ongoing school improvement. This direct participation in school governance not only strengthens their sense of belonging but also reinforces their role in shaping the school's future. These ideas demonstrate Phoenix's deep commitment to student agency and collectively contribute to a culture where students are not just learners but active participants in shaping their education, thereby becoming more confident, responsible, and self-directed individuals.
