Highlights of Exemplary Practices Aligned with the 18 Characteristics of Successful Middle Schools

Area #1 (Characteristics 1–7): Culture & Community At Watson Mountain, building culture isn't just a buzzword—it’s how we make sure middle schoolers actually feel like they belong here. Everything we do connects back to helping students leave their P.R.I.N.T. (Proactive, Resilient, Inquisitive, Noble, Team-Oriented) on our building. Trusted Adults in Every Corner: Middle school is tough, so we make sure no student flies under the radar. From transition events like PEAK Week to one-on-one counselor check-ins, we build real connections early. The proof is in the results: after our annual bullying prevention lessons, over 99% of our students said they have at least one adult in the building they trust and can turn to when things get hard. Clubs for Everyone: We don't just offer sports and standard after-school programs. We run over 25 different teacher-led clubs in 7-week rotations throughout the year so kids can try new things without a huge commitment. Because teachers run these based on their own passions, it gives our staff a chance to connect with kids outside of grades and assignments. Last year, 72% of our entire student body joined at least one club. Keeping Families in the Loop: We want parents to be part of the middle school experience, not pushed away. We host signature events like Bring Your Parent to School Day and Yeti Finders, send out our weekly Mountain Messenger, and regularly mail home Yeti Yellout Postcards—along with bi-weekly admin calls home—just to share unprompted good news with families.

Area #2 (Characteristics 8–12): Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment Instruction at Watson Mountain centers on active engagement, cognitive processes, and productive struggle rather than passive lectures. Consistent Instructional Alignment: Teachers utilize our LEARN Model (Launch, Entry, Activate, Reflect, Next Steps) and the unified Watson Formative 5 assessment approach. This reduces "grade anxiety" by focusing on real-time feedback, choice boards, and retake opportunities for scores below 70%. Active, Experiential Science & Literacy: Learning comes alive through hands-on experiences like Trout in the Classroom, hydroponic gardening, the 6th-grade MWEE watershed field trip, and schoolwide literacy initiatives like Project LIT and One Book, One Community. Embedded Interventions: Every student accesses a 40-minute Resource/Study Hall every other day to work directly with core content teachers, while targeted math and reading support happen seamlessly without stripping away student elective choices.

Area #3 (Characteristics 13–18): Leadership & Organization Leadership at Watson Mountain rejects isolation in favor of shared responsibility, active reflection, and "Hiring Joy" to maintain a vibrant adult culture that directly benefits students. Integrated Leadership Teams: Collaboration is driven through specialized Engagement Groups (Literacy, Voices/Equity, MTSS/PBIS, Green Team), bi-weekly Interdisciplinary Team (IT) meetings for a 360-degree view of student progress, Collaborative Learning Teams (CLTs), and a 7-member Unified Mental Health Team (UMHT). Responsive Leadership Agility: When initial rollout feedback on our Yeti Quest Program showed staff needed greater clarity, leadership purposefully scaled back to listen—handing the initiative to a summer committee of staff leaders to build true collective ownership. Intentional Culture Building: Leadership prioritizes staff connection by replacing traditional All-Staff meetings with Together Thursdays—monthly morning gatherings focused on culture, peer recognition (like our "Golden Goggles" award), and professional collaboration.

Essential Attribute: EMPOWERING Empowerment is woven into daily life on The Mountain, giving students direct voice, authentic leadership roles, and real-world impact. Student Voice & Ownership: Students actively shape school culture as elected SCA representatives, student ambassadors conducting school tours, and creators of our daily, completely student-led morning news show, Yappin’ Yetis. Authentic Service & STEM Impact: Through the Computer Refurbishing Club, students gain hands-on IT skills while restoring computers to donate free to local families in need. Community efforts like the annual Yeti-Trot raised over $13,000 for local charities, while international supply drives extend student impact as far as Nepal. Rigorous Academic Platforms: Students take ownership of their intellectual growth by competing and excelling on local and state levels through platforms like Science Olympiad, Odyssey of the Mind, Math Counts, LEGO League, Model UN, and theatrical productions like Matilda Jr.

Essential Attribute: CHALLENGING Watson Mountain stands out for holding high expectations for all students while providing the differentiation and support necessary to make high-rigor learning accessible. Cultivating Cognitive Process & Discourse: Classrooms across all subjects prioritize deep thinking over simple answer-getting. Students routinely engage in Socratic Seminars to defend their ideas and apply the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework to solve real-world issues—such as analyzing environmental challenges in 7th-grade Science. Targeted "Learning Zones": Using real-time formative data, teachers align daily assignments to individual learning zones, ensuring every student receives tailored direct support or high-level enrichment based on where they are in their learning journey. Student Self-Assessment & Agency: Every staff member maintains a "Raise the Bar" goal aligned with our school innovation plan. In turn, students use Single Point Rubrics to evaluate their own work, articulately defending how they met or exceeded standards, while choice-board projects let them select high-level pathways to demonstrate mastery.
