Highlights of Exemplary Practices Aligned with the 18 Characteristics of Successful Middle Schools

Characteristic 12: Varied and ongoing assessments advance learning as well as measure it.

Professional Learning Communities, Balanced Assessment Calendar, whole child
MSGA values and provides protected common planning time for the core content areas. An instructional framework has been developed to support the umbrella of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. This allows us to meet the needs of the whole student encompassing social, emotional, and intellectual needs while honoring the individuality of each student. We pride ourselves with making real-world connections and sharing in learning each other’s culture as we learn more about our own. Additionally, building a Balanced Assessment Calendar has provided various formative and summative assessments that align with the standard. This allows PLC’s to focus on actual instruction and the specific needs of the student.

Characteristic 13: A shared vision developed by all stakeholders guides every decision.

Continuous school improvement Leadership cultivates high student expectations, with increased academic rigor, while focusing on personal responsibility.
MSGA encourages students to be their own advocate as it will prepare students for the challenge of high school and beyond. Each student has their own advisor which allows them someone to connect with for additional guidance and support. The School Governance Team, PTSA, and the School Cabinet all work together to drive continuous school improvement initiatives. Building partnerships with all stakeholders is essential as this drives our unified vision.

Characteristic 1: Educators respect and value young adolescents.

Transition for rising 6th Graders, Club Wednesday, PBIS
MSGA leads numerous transition events for rising 6th grade students throughout the school year. Additionally, current 6th grade students are celebrated through Student-Led conferences, various performing arts events, athletics, and awards assemblies. Additionally, MSGA continues to develop the interest of our students through Club Wednesday (various clubs open to all students within the school day). Furthermore, we incorporate PBIS to focus on encouraging positive behaviors amongst our students.
